Mission

Our innovative mission supports and complements the overall mission of the College of Science and the University:

Better understand and facilitate the variety of ways in which people of all ages and backgrounds engage in science and mathematics learning throughout their day and lifespan.

We are the first Science & Mathematics Department in the country to embrace lifelong science and mathematics learning, by offering preparation for the next generation of learning leaders, whether they are K-12 or university teachers, home-schoolers or educators in museums, zoos, national parks or public broadcasting organizations. Our students take core courses together and build a community of learners that is committed to and understands how to support lifelong science and mathematics learning in a variety of settings.

To this end we are also committed to understanding the role of lifelong science & mathematics learning in the development and maintenance of vibrant sustainable communities and strive to foster scholarship, openness, intellectual stimulation, flexibility, and a sense of community.
